Honey Bee Biology

Amazing close-up bee photos!

I have a real treat today, some fantastic close-up shots of honey bees! This weekend I was delighted to attend some events of the Philadelphia Science Festival, notably, the Discovery Day in Hunting Park, where I was running a booth for the Philadelphia Beekeeper’s Guild.
This is pretty much my ideal afternoon; sitting in the sun, showing off bees, telling all sorts of people all about bees.
As if I wasn’t already in heaven, I was visited by a fellow from a neighboring booth, who showed me how to turn your smart phone into a microscope. This is a really really cool idea, and we teamed up to take these amazing microscopic images of bees. Now bear in mind that microscopes made with smart phones and laser pointers are not exactly highly scientific, and you can’t zoom in to the cellular structure, but it still yielded some great shots.
